Musicians are masters!
Have you ever wondered why musicians are so powerful? Why Lady GaGa can influence millions, and captivate an audience of 10's of thousands for hours? Why Bruce Springsteen can draw screaming fans by the busload to travel great distances to see him perform?
Has it ever crossed your mind why a singer can command hundreds of thousands of dollars for a single performance? Many speakers often gets only a few hundred dollars...period... and some don't even receive that!
I am going to share with you the answer to many questions you may have about how the world works. The answer to such questions as:
How come the smartest kids in high-school don't always go on to be the most successful?
How come the best candidates don't always get the best job?
How come singers can say a bunch of gibberish and nonsense and get paid more for their fluff and candy... meanwhile my great material goes unnoticed by the world? (What gives anyway????)
How well you communicate is how successful you will be. The secret to all the above questions is in 3 simple numbers.
If you understand these 3 numbers your world will open up, the world will make a lot more sense and if you implement these three numbers your life will attract an abundance of success!!
The three numbers are 7, 38, 55, but what do they mean? More on that in a moment.
Have you ever sat down to plan a lesson, plan a presentation, or plan a speech? Maybe you sat in your office at home for hours and carefully wrote up everything, every word that your were going to say. You used your thesaurus to pick impressive sounding words and technical jargon that you think is going to really connect with your audience. Then once it's all planned out, you quickly go through the material, look over a few slides you threw together and decide you're ready to present! STOP!!!
You just spent a ton of effort planning for the first number, 7. Seven is NOT a very big number!!
7 is the importance your words play in great communication... on a scale of 1-100! So when planning to communicate something to others, words will come into play but they're not that important. Just look at great music. The words are crazy and often inappropriate for the sentence, but are used because they sound good.
Which leads to the second number, 38. 38 is over 5 times more powerful than the last number (7). 7 was the importance of words in your communication, tone is over five times more powerful, carrying 38% of the importance. I have disagreements with my significant other all the time because of tone. I can say "I love you" with a rough tone and get a far more negative response than if I say "I hate your guts" with a soft and caring tone. But it's not just the tone that allows for this kind of communication it's also your body.
When I say "I hate your guts" and she smiles and gives me a playful hug it's not because at the same time that I used a soft tone I scowled and lowered my brow. She gives me the hug because she saw me grinning, and with eyes twinkling she knew how I really felt about her. This sappy display from my personal life is the last number 55! 55 is the importance of body language on how people perceive your message. 55% is your mouth (smiling vs sombre), eyes (twinkling or serious), hands (where are they?), feet (nervous shuffling?), gestures (full body, hands, etc...), and all the other intricate little things your body can do.
Combine body language (55%) with tonality (38%) and you've got 93% of your communication.
So why are great singers where they are? Because they understand 38 & 55!
Why are great speakers able to move & inspire audiences? They understand 38 & 55!
Next time you're trying to craft a presentation, spend some time on the words, words are important. The words carry the important message you are trying to get across. Without words your presentation would be nothing more than a bunch of feelings that other people would not know how to use. Words play a vital role in your communication. You NEED 7, as well as 38 & 55 to get to 100%!!!
Where most people fall short is in their delivery. They focus on the 7%, on the words alone without worrying about their body language and tone. Remember you need all the instruments to make a great sounding orchestra. A great piece of classical music (words) will still sound horrible in the wrong key (tone) or with a conductor who doesn't feel the passion in the music (think of how passionately they conduct, and with such authority as they wave their arms to the music).
When writing up your next presentation, spend some time on the words you use and then think about how the words sound, and how they sound when YOU say them! Think about what you'll do with your body as you say each syllable, it will determine if the audience believes the words and will play a vital role in delivering a great speech!
Communication is:
7% Words,
38% Tone,
55% Body Language
7, 38, 55!!

When The Pupil is Ready
As a business owner you need to be constantly learning new things. But learning brand new material is not always necessary. Sometimes you just need to learn something and study until you "get it."
First thing this morning I had one of these moments.
We've all heard that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." I want to modify that, "learning is in the mind of the student." Sometimes we hear something and say "ahh, I understand," and on a superficial level you logically see how it makes sense but you don't really get it. We see a person and are attracted to the physical and say, "ahh, they're beautiful," but it takes being around that person and seeing them in a number of different lights to appreciate the true beauty.
Every morning for the past month I have been listening to 2, 5 minute speeches about getting motivated to be successful. These types of things set the tone for the day and help push you to get out of bed early. I truly think you can judge the happiness in your life by your willingness to hop out of bed excitedly in the morning. These 2 speeches can be found on YouTube (search: How Bad Do You Want It), and take the listener through the story of a young man speaking with an old guru to learn the secret of success. They're really good and I highly recommend them first thing in the morning!!
This morning I was listening and I had a moment. A connection. Some people say you need to hear something 3 times to get it, I must be slow because it took me about 25 times. I had a moment where I really "got it." I heard the story 25 times and those first 24 times I saw logically how it made sense but it wasn't really going to change my life. On the 25th time, I got it, and I now feel I can incorporate the idea into my own life.
For those of you who are curious what the advice was, the story explains that when you can't breathe, the only thing you care about is to get some air. When you can't breathe you don't care about partying, sleeping, eating. You don't care about "no basketball game," and when I heard "basketball game" something clicked. I don't know why but I felt like all of a sudden I got the meaning of the speech. It meant something to me today that it didn't mean yesterday because I had something in my head that I didn't have yesterday. I was now ready to absorb the message and had not been ready before.
"When the pupil is ready the master will appear." When I was ready to absorb the message it became clear and right in front of me. Up until that moment the pupil was not ready.
As a business owner you need to recognize that you must always grow. The nature of the world is to grow and develop and move forward. The world is fast moving and the simple act of not moving means you're being left behind. Your business can only grow by the amount that you do. Go out there, find some highly recommended literature and read it. If it doesn't make sense then read it again. If it doesn't make sense then maybe you're just not ready for the message, go away from the book, read it again after broadening your horizons a bit and by then maybe the master will appear.
