As a business owner you need to be constantly learning new things. But learning brand new material is not always necessary. Sometimes you just need to learn something and study until you "get it."
First thing this morning I had one of these moments.
We've all heard that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." I want to modify that, "learning is in the mind of the student." Sometimes we hear something and say "ahh, I understand," and on a superficial level you logically see how it makes sense but you don't really get it. We see a person and are attracted to the physical and say, "ahh, they're beautiful," but it takes being around that person and seeing them in a number of different lights to appreciate the true beauty.
Every morning for the past month I have been listening to 2, 5 minute speeches about getting motivated to be successful. These types of things set the tone for the day and help push you to get out of bed early. I truly think you can judge the happiness in your life by your willingness to hop out of bed excitedly in the morning. These 2 speeches can be found on YouTube (search: How Bad Do You Want It), and take the listener through the story of a young man speaking with an old guru to learn the secret of success. They're really good and I highly recommend them first thing in the morning!!
This morning I was listening and I had a moment. A connection. Some people say you need to hear something 3 times to get it, I must be slow because it took me about 25 times. I had a moment where I really "got it." I heard the story 25 times and those first 24 times I saw logically how it made sense but it wasn't really going to change my life. On the 25th time, I got it, and I now feel I can incorporate the idea into my own life.
For those of you who are curious what the advice was, the story explains that when you can't breathe, the only thing you care about is to get some air. When you can't breathe you don't care about partying, sleeping, eating. You don't care about "no basketball game," and when I heard "basketball game" something clicked. I don't know why but I felt like all of a sudden I got the meaning of the speech. It meant something to me today that it didn't mean yesterday because I had something in my head that I didn't have yesterday. I was now ready to absorb the message and had not been ready before.
"When the pupil is ready the master will appear." When I was ready to absorb the message it became clear and right in front of me. Up until that moment the pupil was not ready.
As a business owner you need to recognize that you must always grow. The nature of the world is to grow and develop and move forward. The world is fast moving and the simple act of not moving means you're being left behind. Your business can only grow by the amount that you do. Go out there, find some highly recommended literature and read it. If it doesn't make sense then read it again. If it doesn't make sense then maybe you're just not ready for the message, go away from the book, read it again after broadening your horizons a bit and by then maybe the master will appear.
Best of Luck in Business
